More Ocean Literacy

Here are a few more things I made or the class did for our ocean theme.

Here are the Harcourt words in an ocean themed bingo game. Click on the picture below to download.

Here is a CVC word bingo game.  I focused on short "u" words as that is what our series is focusing on at this time.  Click on the picture to download.

We also read a poem called "The Little Fishes".  We used visualizing to illustrate the poem and then located sight words and a selected letter. Click on the photo to download.

We used this poem as an inspiration for writing our own poems about other sea creatures.

Our art teacher did this project with the first graders, based on "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister.  She used pastels and recycled shiny paper. This is my son's project.

Last, I have some ocean themed math sheets.  I made these based on the objectives the students missed most on their last math test which was subtraction.  Our Wrap-Around tutors will use these or I may send them home for homework.

Spring Bulletin Boards and Crafts

I've said before that I love all the colorful bulletin boards as I walk down my hallway at school, so I decided to highlight some of them here :)

Here is our awesome Wrap Around class.  They have a couple of projects going on their board.  Here are some close ups.
A cute bee

Paper flowers

Here is my board that I just took down.  The caterpillars and ladybugs were made with the art teacher in art class.

This board is the from the hearing impaired preschool across the hall. Based on the book "Ollie" by
Olivier Dunrea.

Another cute project from our preschoolers!  Ladybugs!!

The last board is my one of our awesome first grade teachers.  I just love the butterfly life cycle project she does with pasta!

Splash in the Ocean Literacy

Our big book for the next few weeks is "Splash in the Ocean" by
Other books we are reading are:

"Fish Faces"  by Norbert Wu

"Swimmy" by Leo Lioni
A song:  "There's a Hole in the Middle of the Sea"   Here is a YouTube video of it:

"The Seashore Noisy Book"

Here are some literacy centers I created for this book:

A sight word game.  For some reason, Microsoft Word was being persnickety and would not let me make a title page.  But I just turn the words over on the table and the kids take turns picking them.  If they know them, they put them on their mat.

A rhyming match:

A phoneme segmentation activity:

A real word/nonsense word sort:
 A beginning sound match:

Sight word bingo.  These are harder Dolch words.  I haven't had time to do the Harcourt words yet.  Maybe this weekend.

That's all for now.  Gotta go help my own baby with his homework before our spring program tonight :)

More Zoo Activities

Here are some more things we did this week with our zoo theme.
We read "Zoo" by Gail Gibbons.

Today we read a poem called "The Zoo".   From this book:
I used to use this book a lot when we did letter of the week.  I hardly use it at all anymore, but the zoo poem sure came in handy this week.  I retyped it.  The children find the high frequency words and highlight them and then they illustrate the poem to practice the skill of visualizing.  If you want a copy, click on the picture below to download.

Here is a student work sample.  Looks like he got a little happy with the highlighter :)

We also worked on a giraffe color a rhyme.  Click on the picture below to download.

Here is a student sample.

We also worked on writing describing poems about several zoo animals.  We used this book to follow directions to draw the animals.

Then we wrote describing poems about the animals.  Last we added detail to our drawings. Here are some samples.

 A snake

A lion

and a giraffe.

We really had a great time learning about the zoo!
